You could get into the habit of asking every customer how they found your business online. OR you can take the easier route and get Google Analytics on your site.
Google Analytics is a free tool from Google that allows you to track visitors on your website. It can tell you how they found your site, through Google or your social media accounts? GA also tell you where in the world visitors are, which pages on your site are they spending the most time and when they leave. You won’t get personal details about your customers such as names, emails or addresses. However, it will give you an understanding the types of people visiting your site. The best thing about Google Analytics is that it is, totally free and easy to use.
Adding Google Analytics to your site
Firstly, you need to register for a Google Analytics account where it will ask you to name your account and add a website name so you can easily find it later. It will then ask you for your website URL and to select a category for your website. It’s important to choose a category so Google can help benchmark for your industry. Then, just select your country and time zone and hit the ‘Get tracking ID’ button.
Google Analytics will generate a tracking ID number starting with ‘AU’, along with an HTML code for your website. From here there are two ways to get Google Analytics to start tracking your website.
All you need to do is add the HTML code, is to copy and paste it in the <HEAD> section of every page on your website. Working with a developer on your site? This is something they can help with. If you are using a Weebly site you can add this code into the ‘header’ box under the tabs Settings > SEO.
If a site has been made using WordPress, connect Google Analytics using a simple plugin. There are plenty to choose from but you can easily find a list of the most popular plugins. Once you have added your plugin, it will ask you to input your AU ID connect to Google Analytics.
For many other ‘click, drag and drop sites’ such as Wix, all you need to do is add your AU ID number to the Google Analytics section under ‘My Domain’. Simple, all done! Check back with Google Analytics 24 hours later and you will start seeing how audiences are interacting with your site.
